Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive, non-surgical and non-ablative procedure for facial rejuvenation. It involves the use of a microneedling device with controlled fine needles that puncture the skin. This creates a channel or micro-wound that triggers the body to fill these micro-wounds by producing new collagen and elastin.

What is microneedling used for?

Microneedling can be used effectively for:

  • Reducing scars caused by acne or burns
  • Fading stretch marks
  • Reducing fine lines and deep wrinkles
  • Correcting hyperpigmentation, melasma or sun damage
  • Lifts and tightens the skin
  • Minimizes skin discoloration
  • Minimizing pore size

Medical microneedling does not change pigment and can be a safe and effective treatment for all skin types and colors. Skin microneedling can treat sensitive and fragile areas that are difficult to treat with other procedures such as the eyes, the neck and the back of the hands.

What is the skin needling procedure like?

The treatment can be performed in an office setting and can be safely repeated every 4 to 6 weeks if needed. The procedure itself will take a little over an hour to complete, depending on the area to be treated and the severity of the problem. A numbing cream will be applied topically to the treatment area. The microneedling device punctures the skin in a cross-hatching pattern, and the technician glides the device over the skin multiple times for best results. Your body will register that it’s been injured and begin the healing treatment. Collagen and elastin are rushed to the area, where they then rejuvenate the skin.

After the procedure, the skin will feel warm and tight, with some redness apparent. These side effects will usually subside within a matter of hours. Sun protection is recommended for several weeks afterward. Most people will begin to see results after the very first appointment, but microneedling can be safely repeated every 4–6 weeks until you achieve the desired results.

What are the advantages of Microneedling over other Skin Resurfacing treatments?

Microneedling is safe and effective on all types and colors of skin. It can also be used on areas of the body that are not conducive to chemical peels or laser resurfacing. In addition, treated and untreated areas are not pronouncedly demarked, which allows scars to be diminished but the surface area to still naturally blend into surrounding surfaces.

Does Microneedling hurt?

Numbing cream is applied 30 minutes prior to treatment, so the procedure is painless and there is no downtime.

What does the aftercare of Microneedling entail?

Patients can resume normal activities but should stay out of the sun on the day of the treatment. There may be some initial redness and/or puffiness in the treated area, that can be covered by makeup the following day. The area is completely healed usually in two days.
